How to use custom fields

Custom fields allow you to store up to 5,000 characters in additional spaces in any Item type (Login, Card, Identity, or Secure Note). Users can select from one of four types to create a custom field (text, hidden, boolean, or linked).

Custom field options

Text

Custom text fields display the information in plain text. These are ideal for non-sensitive text.

Hidden

Custom hidden fields allows the value of the field to be hidden by default, similar to a password field, and requires the use of the reveal button to show them. Custom hidden fields are best used for sensitive information.

Boolean

Custom boolean fields use a checkbox to store a simple TRUE (checked) or FALSE (unchecked) value. Boolean fields can be used to fill a variety of forms or selections during login

Linked

A custom linked field's value is linked to the item’s existing username or password field. Given the right field name, linked custom fields can be used to solve issues where your browser extension can’t auto-fill usernames and passwords for a particular site.

Adding a custom field

Custom fields can be added in all Bitwarden clients. Use the edit option to add a custom field to an existing item, or you can find the option to add a custom field at the bottom of a new item.

Naming custom fields

You can name a custom field whatever you want. However, in order to enable auto-fill for a custom field, the name of the custom field in the item will need to match the field name on the web page.

Getting a website field name for auto-fill

To find the name of a field you want to auto-fill in your browser, you will need to have the Bitwarden Browser extension already installed. Then, navigate to the third-party website (ex. AWS), right click in the field, select Bitwarden, and select copy custom field name. Paste the value into your new custom field name and then enter the value you want the field to fill below.
