Transfer Items to Organization

When your organization activates the Enforce organization data ownership policy, you may be asked within a Bitwarden browser extension to transfer your items to the organization. Your organization, through this policy, requires all items to be owned by the organization for security and compliance.

If you are prompted to transfer items, you have two options:

  • Accept Transfer: Accepting the transfer of your items to the organization will move the items in My vault to a new location called My Items. My Items, unlike collections, is a place for you to store items that do not need to be shared with other members. Once the transfer is complete:

    • Transferred items can be found in My Items, only directly shared with you but visible by and owned by the organization.

    • You should begin saving new items that don't need to be shared in My Items, as your old My vault location will no longer be available.

  • Decline and leave: You can decline the transfer of items to the organization if you need to move personal items out of your vault before transferring, but you will immediately lose access to items shared through the organization and any active organization features. If you do decide to leave the organization, the recommended workflow is:

    1. Export your items and remove items that should belong to the organization from the downloaded file.

    2. Import the curated file, which should only include your personal items, into a personal Bitwarden account.

    3. In your organization account, delete the items that you moved over to your personal account to prevent them from being transferred to the organization.

    4. Contact an organization administrator to get access to the organization restored, and this time Accept Transfer.

    5. Delete the downloaded export file.
