Easily share vault items with a link

publicado :

Bitwarden premium users and paid organization members can now share vault items with anyone, even those who don’t use Bitwarden, through a secure link. This makes it easy to collaborate with contractors, teams from partner organizations, or even a family member.

Share via link is now available for Bitwarden accounts with premium features. Use it in the Bitwarden extension and desktop and web apps, with support for mobile coming in a later release.

The process is simple, secure, and takes only a few clicks.

Share item via link

  1. Find the item to share in the vault, click on the three-dot menu, and click Share via link

  2. A window with basic options appears. Enter the intended recipients’ email addresses, choose any additional options, and select Copy link

  3. Paste the link into an email or chat application and send it off!

Share via link is built on Bitwarden Send workflows that provide end-to-end, zero-knowledge encryption of shared data, as well as options for additional security. Edit the created link from the Send tab in the Bitwarden clients, where more options are available.

  • Expiration: Choose how long the link will work. In the advanced options, this is listed as Deletion date

  • Maximum access count: Select how many times the link can be accessed. Choosing One time share during creation will automatically set this to 1.

  • Hide my email address from recipients: Choose whether or not your email address is included when the item is opened by the recipient. This option may be controlled by an enterprise policy.

While optional for a normal text or file Send, share via link requires listing recipients’ email addresses during creation, which will be verified when accessing.

SECURITY TIP: These options impact only access to the link itself. The recipient may have saved and still have access to the item’s contents even after the link expires.

Access a shared item

Accessing an item shared via link is just as simple as creating one.

Verify your email for send via link

  1. Click on the link that was sent through an email or chat from the sender

  2. Enter your email in the page that opens. The email entered must match what the sender entered when they created the link

  3. Retrieve the code sent to that email address and enter it

The contents of the item are decrypted and made available to be copied wherever needed.

Viewing a shared item

Saving the item directly into a Bitwarden vault from this flow is planned for a future release.

Collaboration with shared passwords, cards, files attached to items, and more is seamless within a shared vault. Items in a shared vault are synced immediately when updates are made, and administrators control access for company security. This method works only between members of the same shared vault, which comes with the free two-person org, Families, Teams, and Enterprise plans.

Use share via link to share vault items with anyone outside the vault, giving a pathway for collaboration with external teams.

  • Items shared via link are point-in-time and don’t sync. A change made after the link is created will not be reflected in the link’s contents

  • SSH keys and passkeys are not supported for sharing via link

  • Files attached to the item are not included

  • The user needs the edit permission on the item being shared

  • Administrators of an organization can choose to turn off share via link altogether.

SECURITY TIP: After the recipient doesn’t need the item anymore, changing sensitive information, like rotating a shared password, is a security best practice.
