Credential leasing enables select employees to see if a privileged credential is stored in their Bitwarden vault, but does not release the username and password until the employee requests access to that credential for a stated period of time and reason. This helps eliminate standing access across the organization. Internal adoption of PAM and password management also increases as employees aren’t forced to use a separate solution. They can find the privileged credentials they need right in their Bitwarden vault.
Advanced access rules govern the conditions by which an employee can request, access, and use a privileged credential. IT and security admins can apply templatized rules to privileged credentials that enforce just-in-time access, manager approvals, IP-address checks, and lease duration, ensuring organizations can quickly get started. They can also build custom rules that map to their specific organization’s policies.
If conditions are met and the credential is leased, the credential will be automatically revoked and password rotated where available when the lease ends. Automatic password rotation is supported on Microsoft Entra ID at private preview launch, with more support coming in the future. For passwords not supported by automatic rotation, a Bitwarden administrator can be notified in-app to rotate the credential. Customers can also configure custom scripts for automatic rotation of server-related credentials on macOS, Windows, and Linux.
All access operations are timestamped and documented in dedicated audit logs with details on who requested access to what, who granted access, who checked-out the credential, and when access ended. All Bitwarden audit logs can also be analyzed with a SIEM integration.
Bitwarden Privileged Controls is not only for traditional privileged credentials or entitlements related to IT system administration and infrastructure. Unlike legacy PAM solutions, Bitwarden also helps protect business-critical credentials that would have a high impact if breached. For example, a compromised social media account that represents the company could have a material impact on reputation and even share price, or SaaS applications containing sensitive financial, employee, or customer information. These types of accounts typically aren’t covered by legacy PAM solutions.
