Bitwarden Send now lets paid plan users restrict access to specific, verified recipients. Choose who can open a Send, and require them to confirm their identity with an emailed verification code before the encrypted content is made available.
Set up email protection for Send recipients
Using email protection adds an identity check to the Send access flow. Here's how to set it up and what the experience looks like on both sides:
Creating an email-verified Send:
When creating a Send, locate the Who can view setting and select Specific people
In the Emails field that appears, add the email addresses of your intended recipients. You can add multiple
Complete the rest of your Send configuration, such as expiration, deletion date, and access limits
Save and share the Send link with your recipients
Note: The Send is not automatically emailed to users. You must still share the Send link separately.
The recipient experience:
When a recipient visits a Send link protected by email verification, they are prompted to enter their email address. If the address they enter matches one you specified during setup, Bitwarden sends a verification code to that inbox. The recipient enters the code, granting them access to the contents of the Send.
Without a matching email or verification code, the Send is inaccessible, even though they have the Send link. This two-step verification, possessing the link and then having access to a confirmed email identity, keeps your Send secure.
Bitwarden Send makes it easy to transmit encrypted information to anyone
Rather than attaching sensitive information to an email or dropping it in a chat message, Bitwarden Send lets you generate a secure link for sharing anything with end-to-end encryption, with specific controls such as expiration time, maximum access count, password protection, and now email verification.
A few examples:
Sharing confidential employment documents with the HR team
A finance team delivering a sensitive report to a board member
Securely sharing tax documents with CPAs or family members
Accessing a Send is not limited to Bitwarden users - anyone can access the Send provided they have the link and meet the requirements set by the user during setup.
Note: Using Bitwarden Send for files is available to users with premium features. Free plan users can only share text securely.
Email-protected Sends is available now for Premium, Families, Teams, and Enterprise plan users. Create a Send in any Bitwarden client and try it out. Interested in trying Bitwarden? Start a free trial today!
