- Bitwarden & The Oreo Autofill Framework
To date you've been able to auto-fill logins with the bitwarden Android app using our auto-fill accessibility service. This works great, however, sometimes at the expense of bad performance and battery life. Earlier this year, Android Oreo (8.0) was released. Oreo includes a particularly nice new feature for password managers called the Autofill Framework. The Autofill Framework provides an easy to use way to quickly fill information into your device's apps, built right into the Android operating system.
We're happy to announce the release of Bitwarden's integration with the Oreo Autofill Framework, complete with auto-filling logins, credit cards, and identity information.
Additionally, as you can see in the example above, authentication of the Autofill Framework works seamlessly with your app's lock options to keep your information safe from unauthorized access.
Bitwarden's integration with the Autofill Framework can even offer to save newly detected items for you, straight into your vault.
Currently the Autofill Framework only works with native apps on your device. This means that the Autofill Framework cannot detect forms from websites in your web browser. Google has said that they will make the Autofill Framework available in the Chrome mobile browser in a future update. We'll be sure to support it as soon as it is available.
If you have an Android device running Oreo you can start using the bitwarden autofill service today. Just make sure you have updated to the latest version of bitwarden, v1.13.0. You can then enable the Autofill Service under the "Tools" tab in the app.
Enjoy!
