Bringing intuitive workflows and visual updates to the Bitwarden browser extension

The Bitwarden mission is to empower everyone to take control of their digital security. That means not only helping people and businesses build strong cybersecurity practices, but also refining the user experience of our products.

From updating the mobile app for a more native look and feel, to redesigning the navigation of the web application, the Bitwarden design team has been listening to and applying your feedback to make Bitwarden even more intuitive and enjoyable to use.

This post shares an exciting sneak peek of the design changes currently in development for the Bitwarden browser extension. Stay tuned for the roll out of these updates in the coming months!

Bitwarden is always looking for ways to improve the experience for users. Over the past year, there has been a lot of great feedback from customers about how the Bitwarden extension can be made even better.

One of the main reasons for redesigning the extension was to address the growing functional coverage of the user interface. As Bitwarden rapidly added new features requested by the community and customers, thoughtfully redesigning the interface became more important. Feedback from customers highlighted the need for a more streamlined, intuitive, and modern interface that would allow for quicker storage and access to online passwords and other credentials.

The design team also saw an opportunity to make the browser extension's design match the overall Bitwarden brand and visual style. By aligning the look and feel across all Bitwarden products, a more consistent and recognizable Bitwarden experience can be created for everyone.

The Bitwarden team has been working hard to improve the browser extension based on user feedback. Here are some of the changes you can expect to see in the coming months:

Refreshed look and feel

The most noticeable difference is the updated visual design of the browser extension. It has a more modern and approachable look that matches the Bitwarden brand. This includes using a new color scheme, updated fonts, and a cleaner, streamlined layout.

Improved navigation and information architecture

To improve the user experience, the extension's navigation and information architecture has been reorganized. Key features and actions are more prominently displayed, making them easier to discover and use. 

One area that was addressed was the ‘New Item’ creation flow. In the updated design, the ‘+’ button was adjusted to be more prominent and labeled 'New’. The button has also been made into a dropdown that allows users to see the different item types available for creation at a glance. With a single click on the relevant type, they can quickly navigate to the appropriate item detail form.

The item detail screen was also refined. In the updated design, the form has been reorganized to group related fields together under clear section headings. Some fields were renamed for extra clarity, such as Website in place of URI.

The updated changes make it easier for new users to get started, and provide a smoother experience for existing Bitwarden customers.

Improved search capabilities

The Tab and Vault pages have been combined to make searching and accessing items in your Bitwarden vault more consistent (as requested by the community).

With the updated experience, filters have been integrated directly into the main vault view itself. This allows you to not only set upfront filters like item type, but then layer on additional criteria like folders or collections without losing context.
