Bitwarden Importer Tool

The Bitwarden importer tool makes it easy to move your passwords and other information from another service to Bitwarden. The Bitwarden importer tool is compatible with:

  • LastPass

The Bitwarden importer will import information into your individual vault using your personal API keys. Once the information has been imported, you can manually move items to be shared in an organization.

Download the Bitwarden importer tool

To get started, you can download the Bitwarden importer tool from Github. Select the best install option for your system:

  • Select the .msix option for the installation wizard.

  • Select the .pkg option for the installation wizard.

  • Select the .zip option for only the application.

Depending on your security settings, MacOS users may receive a warning that is preventing the download. See Apple's documentation for additional security settings information.

Follow the installation prompts and complete your download.

Getting started with the Bitwarden importer tool

Open the Bitwarden importer tool. A window will appear with several blank fields that require information:

Complete the fields with the following data:

Description

Bitwarden server URL

This is the server URL for your Bitwarden instance. By default, this value will be https://bitwarden.com. Self-hosted users will enter their self-hosted URL.

Bitwarden personal API key client_id

The client_id is your vault's personal API key. Copy the entire value and paste it into the Bitwarden importer field.

This value can be located here.

Bitwarden personal API key client_secret

The personal API key secret is the client_secret value located in the same window as the value above. Copy the entire client_secret and paste it into the Bitwarden importer field.

Bitwarden master password

Enter the master password for your Bitwarden account.

Import from service

Select the service you are importing data from.

Service email

Enter the login email for the service you are importing data from.

Service master password

Enter the master password for the service you are importing data from.

Additional fields

Additional options require attention when importing data to Bitwarden:

Description

My organization uses a SSO configuration that does not require a master password

Select this option if your Bitwarden organization uses SSO with Customer Managed Encryption (Key Connector).

Skip items from shared folders

This option will not import data that belongs to shared folders.

Once you have provided all fields with data and are ready to import, select Import at the bottom of the window.

Troubleshooting

If any of the credentials are not correct, you will receive a notifications stating the cause of failure.

Missing information:

If you are missing any information, you will receive an error indicating what field is missing.

Incorrect credentials:

This will result in an error indicating that one or more of the fields has incorrect data.

The following is a list of possible issues to check for:

  • Verify that your client_id and client_secret have been copied and pasted exactly as they appear in your web vault.

  • Verify that the correct master password for Bitwarden has been entered.

  • Verify that your provider information has been entered in correctly (service email & master password).

  • If you have any 2FA methods enabled on your service provider other than TOTP, you will need to disable them in order to proceed.

  • Check your email, your service provider may have sent an email regarding a log in attempt that will require approval.
