# How the world's largest pest control company secured a global workforce with Bitwarden

From call center workers to the C-suite, Bitwarden became the password management standard across Rentokil Initial.

## Overview

**Founded:** 1925
**Size:** 63,400 employees
**Industry:** Pest control and hygiene and wellbeing services
**Location:** Global presence in 90 countries

Rentokil Initial is a global pest control services company with a presence in 90 countries. Currently the world's largest pest control company, it supports more than 5 million customers ranging from small businesses to multinational corporations. With a globally distributed workforce spanning field technicians, call center staff, and corporate teams, protecting sensitive internal and customer information is a constant priority. Passwords are central to that effort, serving as the primary gateway to critical business and customer data.

## Situation: Security review prompts search for a new password manager

According to Brad Grimstead, Rentokil Initial Global End User Computing Manager, the company had been using a competitor password manager. A security review prompted Grimstead's predecessor to begin evaluating alternatives.. Grimstead, who had been using Bitwarden personally for nearly a decade, surfaced it as a natural replacement.

"My predecessor was looking for a new password manager and I said, 'Have you thought about using Bitwarden?'" recalled Grimstead. "He came back a few days later and said, 'Yeah Brad, we're using Bitwarden.'"

Rentokil Initial has relied on Bitwarden for password management since 2021.

## Solution: Bitwarden, the globally recommended standard for IT

"You get complaints about everything," said Grimstead. "A Chrome update that changed how bookmarks work, a Windows update that changed the recycle bin icon — anything and everything gathers complaints. Bitwarden tends to be the one thing I never hear any problems about. It works consistently across Windows, Mac, Linux, Chrome OS, Android, iPhone, and iPad."

Bitwarden users span every level of the organization. With over 60,000 employees and around 1,500 licenses, participation is by employee request; most users self-select based on need or an IT recommendation. Any employee anywhere in the world who asks IT about password management or two-factor authentication (2FA) gets the same answer: use Bitwarden.

When Bitwarden was first introduced, Grimstead built a Google Slides guide to ease the transition. It walks users through accessing the Bitwarden vault, logging in via single sign-on (SSO), installing the browser extension, and configuring recommended settings.

## Bitwarden powers shared access, secure notes, and 2FA at Rentokil Initial

Grimstead and team configure Bitwarden shared collections for groups that need to share passwords or API keys. Rentokil Initial also audits shared vaults to revoke access when employees leave or change roles, as internal mobility is common. Bitwarden secure notes round out the toolkit, giving teams a place to store sensitive information directly alongside password entries.

Rentokil Initial previously relied on Authy for Desktop as its recommended 2FA solution, particularly for employees who locked phones away during shifts or preferred not to use personal devices for work authentication. When Authy announced the end of life for the desktop app, the move left Rentokil Initial without a reliable desktop 2FA option. Bitwarden time-based one-time password (TOTP) generation fills that gap directly.

“Bitwarden was massively helpful," said Grimstead. "Bitwarden is so much more than just a password manager. It also has the ability to generate those TOTP codes and that was a massive lifesaver for us." Grimstead estimates roughly half of Bitwarden users at Rentokil Initial now rely on it for 2FA.

## Security awareness and a track record of reliability accelerate Bitwarden adoption

As security awareness grows across the organization, Grimstead expects Bitwarden adoption to accelerate. The Rentokil Initial team is already seeing an uptick, with as many as 30 to 40 new user requests arriving overnight.

Grimstead expects Bitwarden adoption to accelerate as AI-powered security threats gain visibility across the organization. As many as 30 to 40 new Bitwarden account requests already arrive overnight.

For Grimstead, simplicity is as compelling as security.

"One of the problems of our era is how to combat the problem of 'your password must be 200 characters long with symbols and numbers'?" said Grimstead. "It's really hard and people get very frustrated - whereas Bitwarden makes that easy. Thanks to how secure Bitwarden generates passwords, the only password I need to know is my Bitwarden master password."

Grimstead advocates for Bitwarden beyond the workplace too, recommending it to family, friends, and anyone who asks for IT advice, including grandparents. "Whether it be personal, enterprise, small business, or large business, I would 100% recommend Bitwarden for anybody."
